Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying aging and age-related diseases is the best strategy to design interventions that will effectively decelerate aging and decrease age-related morbidity. Recently, genetic and metabolic research performed in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) has significantly contributed to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of aging, and C. elegans has been instrumental in identifying longevity pathways conserved from worms to humans. In my lab we aim to develop innovative strategies to uncover compounds with biological activity against aging in C. elegans with the eventual goal to ameliorate human aging and disease.
